outro (other, in Portuguese) is a Lisbon-based platform for investigation and artistic creation directed by Sílvio Vieira. Founded in 2018 by João Leão, Patrícia Moreira, Sílvio Vieira and Sofia Fialho. outro started in 2017 as an informal club, reading on the subjects of biology, philosophy, and social sciences while also signing its own texts and materials. The body of work that started building from there was later indexed in what would become the matrix for the first two projects: this website and the play Trees let go of their fairest branches.
outro.pt went public in November 2017 and we consider it our first home. Born from the will to share what we were thinking, the goal was to create a platform that was close to our (present and future) audience through a blog, illustrations, an etymology dictionary, and something like a library, with excerpts from other artists and thinkers (the blog and the dictionary are only available in Portuguese). Trees let go of their fairest branches, a theatre play with ties to cinema and sculpture, premiered in 2019 in Arquipélago — Contemporary Arts Center (São Miguel Island) and in November 2020 as part of the Temps d’Images Lisbon Festival. The play, written by Sílvio Vieira, was selected by EURODRAM’s Portuguese Committee in 2020.
2021 introduces a trilogy of site-specific shows: ARENA, a play without words built from and for Garagem do Chile, an old mechanics shop in the heart of Lisbon; ECUADOR (July 2023, Centro Cultural de Belém) and ZENITH (2024, open air, co-production with D. Maria II National Theatre).
